Why some Americans are naive about world music?

I have noticed some only are familiar with english music and thats it. You can tell from the weddings etc. But when you go to others they play italian, russian greek music etc.. Are some Americans naive about music as they are of world issues as well?

  1. It's not only Americans actually, it's the majority of the people. I myself aren't that familiar with music other than American or British (perhaps Swedish and Dutch.. but still.) The explanation is not that wierd though, because people generally like music they can understand, in their own language, and not a lot of people speak greek or russian or anything. And if that kind of music does have English lyrics to it, it often doesn't sound like anything people've grown up with and just sounds "wierd". I agree people in general are too naive and should open up a bit towards music from other countries. :)
  2. And then you think we're stupid. Our language is American English, so why on earth we would listen to music we don't understand? If it's non-lyrical then it's just fine. This is just plain common sense. Would you listen to a Chinese rap-song (just an example assuming you're not Chinese) if I give you one? I rest my case.
  3. I think it's because English is nowadays spread worldwide, so a singer or a band who want to become famous all over the world has to sing in that language. You have so much music in English, why would you have to listen to something unfamiliar? As Italian, it's a totally different situation. From when I was a little kid I used to listen to "English music", even though at that time I didn't understand a single world. I think that has definitely opened my mind because today for me it's not a problem to listen to something in a different language, even if I obviously prefer some Italian or English music. In Italy from time to time you can see some French or Spanish songs that top the chart, but that can be seen all over the Europe I think (not in the UK). Sorry for my bad English.
